The vacuum pump is usually installed on the engine and driven by the crankshaft. It creates a vacuum by the up and down movement of the piston in the pump body. When the engine is running, the downward movement of the piston causes the pump chamber to expand and the pressure to decrease, thus creating a low-pressure area, i.e., a vacuum.
The vacuum generated is transferred via vacuum lines to the brake booster (usually a vacuum booster). This device uses vacuum boost to increase the pressure in the brake system, reducing the amount of force the driver needs to put on the brake pedal.
The vacuum booster uses the vacuum from the vacuum pump to increase the pressure in the brake master cylinder. When the driver steps on the brake pedal, the vacuum booster uses the vacuum force to help push the master cylinder piston, increasing the pressure of the brake fluid, and generating sufficient braking force even if the driver applies less pedal force.
When the driver releases the brake pedal, the vacuum in the vacuum booster is released and the system returns to its initial state, allowing the braking system to quickly return to a non-braking state.
In the intelligent braking system, the electronic vacuum pump (EVP) plays a key role. It does not depend on the operation of the engine and can provide reliable vacuum assistance when the engine is stopped or running at low speed, improving the flexibility and safety performance of the braking system.
